Ke Motho is a psychological horror film set in a quiet South African neighbourhood, following Motho, a sentient being desperate to understand what it means to be human. After being abandoned on the side of the road, Motho becomes fascinated by Lesedi, another sentient being who effortlessly blends into human society through beauty, charm and seduction. Motho secretly observes Lesedi’s interactions with people and grows obsessed with replicating human connection, affection and desirability. As Motho studies Lesedi, they begin mimicking human behaviour using mannequins, makeup, rehearsed conversations and stolen clothing. Motho’s attempts at imitation become increasingly disturbing as they struggle to grasp genuine emotion and intimacy. Meanwhile, Lesedi is revealed to be predatory in nature, luring men into her home and feeding on their life force through physical contact, leaving their bodies behind concealed in plastic bags. Motho’s fascination with Lesedi slowly transforms into imitation. After discovering a dead woman hidden inside their closet, Motho dresses in her clothing and fully adopts the performative behaviours they have observed. By the end of the film, Motho emerges from a cocoon-like shell, symbolising a completed transformation. They successfully lure a man into following them home using the same seductive techniques practiced by Lesedi, implying that Motho has embraced the same predatory behaviour. The story concludes with no pro-social resolution, as the cycle of manipulation, violence and consumption continues without consequence or redemption.
