"The Air Smells Like Mangoes" can be regarded as a psychological film that depicts the inherited trauma, memory, and emotional barricades that are built up by the characters in order to protect themselves. The protagonist Izzy seems like a cheerful and expressive person who finds herself moving around two completely different houses. In her mother's home, she feels comfortable, secure, and protected emotionally. Mangoes in this house are always ripe, fresh, and alive. However, when she goes to her father's house, she is exposed to a different experience – that of a tense and unstable atmosphere of fear and sorrow. The mangoes in his place seem rotten and decaying, which means that the situation there is deteriorating on an emotional level. While facing these conflicts, Izzy becomes lost inside some mysterious and strange psychological void. This particular concept exists between memory, emotions, and imagination, and represents visually the inner state of the main character. This space contains her subconscious feelings, suppressed thoughts, memories, and all emotional baggage that was left to her as inheritance. While Izzy considers her father to be the cause of most of her misery, she gradually uncovers bits of information that paint the picture of a man who carries a lot of emotional wounds of his own. From photographs forgotten long ago, buried memories, and emotions found among the debris of the Void, she comes to terms with the fact that it is possible to hand down one’s suffering through several generations. However, this book does not aim to justify his actions and only tries to examine whether gaining a deeper understanding of the other person’s pain can help get out of this spiral of suffering. The line between reality, memories, and the Void becomes increasingly blurred, and the main character needs to choose whether to remain the keeper of the burden that was passed on from generation to generation within her family or to address it. This book explores an important topic of generational trauma through the use of symbolic imagery, fragmented narration, and psychology of the characters involved.
