In 1970s Soweto, Boitumelo “Tumi” Maseko, a jazz singer, finds love amid and navigates the dangers of forbidden expression in an apartheid-ruled South Africa. When she meets Lerumo Khumalo, a street artist, a spark is ignited, and the two use their art in the fight for freedom. They soon face the cost that comes with threatening the white-ruled government, when they draw the attention of Constable Thulani Mokoena, a black police sergeant obsessed with enforcing order. In a move designed to shatter the spirit of their anti-apartheid movement, Mokoena kills Lerumo in front of the community, leaving Tumi at a crossroads: to remain silent or use her voice as a weapon. Brushstrokes in Blues reminds us that art, an often overlooked form of resistance, can remain an unshakable force of identity, even when the odds seem impossible.
