Scorched follows Thoko, a young immigrant girl, on a harrowing journey through loss and resilience in South Africa. After a violent attack on her family, Thoko is taken to a shelter for refugees, where she learns her parents likely didn't survive. Struggling with grief, she finds hope and strength in the friendships she forms with volunteers Amahle, who becomes a mother figure, and Zama, a girl with internalized xenophobia, who finds redemption through Thoko.Determined to honor her parents with a Malawian burial, Thoko faces obstacles to break back into Township, yet she refuses to give up. As she makes it through to where her home use to be, she confronts the painful truth that her parents’ bodies are gone. Amahle offers her a new home, but when a bus to Malawi arrives, Thoko must decide: return to her roots or build a new life.
